Bath to Host 'All-Star' Festival

Today students from Allegany, Chemung, Steuben, Schuyler, and Yates county schools will travel to Haverling High School for the 2008 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Area All-State Festival. The areas finest high school musicians will begin rehearsing as members of the concert band, string orchestra, mixed choir or women’s choir and will work diligently for approximately six hours. Tomorrow students will begin rehearsals in the morning and their efforts will culminate in an afternoon performance.

This year the Concert Band will be under the direction of Mr. Ronald Sutherland, the Mixed Choir under the direction of Mr. Darren Litz, the Women’s Choir under the direction of Mr. Lonnie Arnold, and the String Orchestra under the direction of Mr. Daniel Millheiser. Each of the guest conductors bring a wealth of knowledge to their position and will provide very memorable learning experiences for the student musicians.

Students are selected for an Area All-State ensemble through an application process that begins in September. Applications include a solo audition rating sheet from the previous school year and music teacher recommendations. Students are then selected through established criteria and are notified of their acceptance in early October. Local school music teachers then establish rehearsal schedules in their home districts and work with their selected students to prepare the music that will be performed at this festival. This year 340 students representing 35 school districts have been accepted to the various ensembles.

The concert will begin at 3:00pm on Saturday, November 22, 2008 in the Haverling High School Auditorium. Tickets are $3.00 each and can be purchased at the door. We invite you to join us for a fine concert presented to you by the areas finest student musicians!
